The Calistoga Fire Department was completely volunteer for 110 years, until 1994 when we converted to paid-call, part-time status.  In 1999 we recruited and hired our first full-time paid Fire Chief, Gary Kraus, previously Chief in Sutter County. After Chief Kraus retired, Steve Campbell was internally recruited and appointed as the full-time Fire Chief.

The Department is staffed by:

  • Steve Campbell, Fire Chief
  • Joe Russo, OES Coordinator
  • Kris Breiner, Training Officer
  • Jason Tamagni, Prevention Officer
  • 10 paid-call firefighters

Our full-time firefighters work from 6:30 am – 5:30 pm seven days a week. They also alternate days on mandatory stand-by during “D Shift” (evenings and weekends), guaranteeing a commanding officer/driver for every call. These three firefighters are responsible for the station, apparatus and equipment maintenance. Additionally, Joe Russo (JRusso@ci.calistoga.ca.us ) is the Office of Emergency Services Coordinator, Kris Breiner  is the Dept. Training Officer and Jason Tamagni is the Dept. Prevention Officer. The paid-call firefighters assist by supplementing needed time off and also responding to all calls when available. Together the full-time and the paid-call firefighters are the key to this departments success.
